PORT HONDURAS MARINE RESERVE

Port Honduras Marine Reserve was established in 2000 under the authority of the Fisheries Department and managed by the Toledo Institute for Development and Environment.

The Marine Reserve is 40,468 ha – a semi-estuarine system that stretches from Monkey River to beyond Rio Grande, and extends approximately 8 kilometers out to sea. It contains a diverse set of ecosystems – coastal and tidal wetlands, coral reef, extensive seagrass and mangrove, but excludes the approximately 140 cayes lying within the overall area. An important resource for local fishermen, the Marine Reserve has also been highlighted for its relatively high value as a fish nursery area, and its role in maintaining the viability of goliath grouper and local manatee populations.

PAYNES CREEK NATIONAL PARK

Payne’s Creek National Park conserves a matrix of broadleaf forest, short grass and pine savannah, and herbaceous and mangrove swamps, centred around a shallow, brackish lagoon system linked to Port Honduras Marine Reserve.
